KNX and Home Automation Glossary

Definitions of technical terms related to KNX and home automation.

D

DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface)

Communication protocol for lighting control, often integrated into KNX installations via a gateway.

Dimmer

Device allowing adjustment of lighting intensity. KNX dimmers are compatible with different types of light sources (LED, halogen, incandescent) and allow creation of personalised ambiances.

E

ETS (Engineering Tool Software)

Official software for configuring and programming KNX installations.

G

Group Address

Address used for functional communication between KNX devices (format: main group/middle group/sub-group).

H

Home Assistant KNX

Integration of the KNX protocol into the open-source Home Assistant home automation platform. Allows combining KNX equipment with other protocols (Zigbee, Z-Wave, WiFi) and extending automation possibilities.

Home Automation

Set of techniques for automating building equipment (lighting, heating, blinds, etc.) to improve comfort, security and energy efficiency.

I

IP Gateway

Interface allowing connection of a KNX installation to the computer network (Ethernet/WiFi). It enables remote control via smartphone or tablet, integration with visualisation servers and communication between multiple KNX lines.

K

KNX

Worldwide open standard for home automation and building control. It enables the control and automation of various functions such as lighting, blinds, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, security, etc.

KNX Actuator

Device that receives telegrams via the KNX bus and executes commands such as turning lights on/off, raising/lowering blinds, etc.

KNX Bus

Communication line through which all KNX devices exchange information in the form of telegrams.

KNX Gateway

Device enabling the KNX system to communicate with other systems or protocols (DALI, Modbus, BACnet, etc.).

KNX IP

KNX transmission via the Internet Protocol (IP), enabling the use of Ethernet or Wi-Fi networks for KNX communication.

KNX Partner

Professional certified by the KNX Association, having completed official training and passed the certification exam.

KNX Power Supply

Device providing the electrical power necessary for devices connected to the KNX bus.

KNX RF (Radio Frequency)

Wireless KNX transmission via radio frequency, mainly used for renovations or extensions of existing installations.

KNX Secure

Security extension of the KNX protocol integrating encryption (AES-128) and authentication of communications. Protects the installation against unauthorised access and hacking, particularly important for sensitive buildings.

KNX Sensor

Device that detects physical events (presence, brightness, temperature, etc.) and transmits them on the KNX bus as telegrams.

KNX Telegram

Message sent on the KNX bus containing information such as source address, destination address and data to be transmitted.

KNX Touch Panel

Wall-mounted visualisation and control interface for KNX installation. Allows control of all home automation functions (lighting, heating, blinds, scenarios) via an intuitive graphical interface. Brands: Gira, ABB, Zennio, Basalte.

KNX TP (Twisted Pair)

KNX transmission via twisted pair cable, the most common transmission medium in KNX installations.

KNX Virtual

KNX simulation software allowing testing and validation of installation programming without physical equipment. Useful for training, scenario testing and debugging before commissioning.

KNX Visualisation

Graphical interface allowing control and monitoring of a KNX installation via a computer, tablet or smartphone.

KNX Weather Station

Outdoor KNX sensor measuring climatic conditions: wind (speed and direction), rain, brightness, temperature. Enables automation of blinds according to weather and protection against bad weather.

L

Legrand Celiane KNX

Range of designer KNX switches and controls from Legrand. Available in various finishes (white, titanium, graphite), it integrates into the Celiane wiring system for a coherent aesthetic.

Line Coupler

KNX device allowing connection of different KNX lines to each other and filtering telegram traffic.

M

Motorisation

System allowing automation of movement for shutters, blinds, curtains or gates. Three main types: wired (direct connection to electrical panel), wireless (RF), or solar (autonomous with photovoltaic panel).

P

Physical Address

Unique address assigned to each KNX device to identify it on the bus (format: area.line.device).

Presence Detector

Sensor detecting movements and/or presence of people in a room. Used for automation of lighting, heating, air conditioning and security systems. KNX detectors can combine multiple technologies (infrared, ultrasound, radar).

S

Scenario

Set of predefined commands executed simultaneously or sequentially to create a particular ambiance or situation.

Siemens GAMMA instabus

Complete range of KNX products from Siemens for building automation. Includes actuators, sensors, interfaces and communication modules for residential and commercial installations.

Smart Home Hub

Home automation control centre that allows you to control and automate connected home equipment (lighting, heating, blinds, etc.). KNX hubs offer superior reliability and interoperability compared to consumer hubs.

Smart Roller Shutter

Roller shutter equipped with a motor and communication module allowing remote or automated control. Can be integrated into a KNX installation for automatic scenarios (sunrise/sunset, presence simulation).

Smart Switch

Smart home switch allowing control of lighting and other equipment with advanced functions: dimmer, scenes, time programming. KNX switches come in push-button, touch or screen versions.

Smart Thermostat

Intelligent temperature regulation device allowing remote control of heating or air conditioning. Integrated into the KNX system, it automatically optimises energy consumption according to occupancy and habits.
